Russia, Ukraine initiate another inmate exchange
According to the ministry, a group of Russian soldiers previously held by Ukraine has been returned to Belarus. There, they are receiving medical and psychological care before continuing on to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation. While the ministry did not specify the exact number of soldiers involved, video footage showed more than a dozen service members chanting “Russia” and holding the national flag.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky also confirmed the swap but similarly withheld details on the number of soldiers exchanged. He stated that many of the returned Ukrainians belonged to the military, National Guard, or border service and had been captured during fighting in Kiev and Chernigov regions in 2022. Ukrainian officials noted that some of the returned prisoners were seriously ill or wounded.
This exchange is part of a larger deal reached in Istanbul on June 2, which included the exchange of about 1,200 prisoners on each side, as well as the return of thousands of soldiers' remains. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously said Moscow had transferred approximately 6,000 Ukrainian bodies and received the remains of 57 Russian soldiers in return.
