Washington, Ankara Maintain Dialogue on F-35 Program
In a message shared on the US social media company X’s platform, Barrack noted that the negotiations revolve around Türkiye’s “desire to rejoin the F-35 program and their possession of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.”
He emphasized that, “As laid out in U.S. law, Türkiye must no longer operate nor possess the S-400 system to return to the F-35 program,” reinforcing the legal conditions tied to Ankara’s potential reinstatement.
Barrack highlighted that the “positive relationship” between President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has fostered “a new atmosphere of cooperation,” enabling what he described as “the most fruitful conversations we have had on this topic in nearly a decade.”
He further remarked that the expectation is for the ongoing dialogue to produce progress that satisfies the security priorities of both nations, saying, “Our hope is that these talks will yield a breakthrough in the coming months that meets both the security requirements of the United States and Türkiye.”
Washington removed Türkiye from the F-35 project in 2019 following Ankara’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 defense platform, asserting that the system jeopardized the aircraft and was incompatible with NATO infrastructure.
Several Turkish defense bodies were subsequently penalized under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
Additionally, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently indicated signs of advancement, noting over the weekend that Ankara is nearing a resolution to its long-running disagreement with Washington related to the CAATSA penalties connected to the S-400 purchase.
