Turkey sends sixth humanitarian aid ship to Sudan

(MENAFN) Türkiye dispatched its sixth “Goodness Ship” on Saturday from the coastal city of Mersin, carrying 2,600 tons of humanitarian aid to Sudan to support those affected by the ongoing conflict.

The shipment was organized by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in cooperation with local authorities, civil society organizations, and the Qatar Fund for Development. Ali Hamza Pehlivan, head of AFAD, noted that Türkiye has remained active in responding to Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, having previously sent 5,500 tons of aid in 2024, along with 30,000 tents across three vessels last month. The latest shipment contains food, personal care items, medical supplies, and materials for shelter.

“Taking into account how the shelter needs of people displaced in Sudan had reached a critical level in December, we began sending goodwill ships on Dec. 7,” Pehlivan said. “Sending three ships in a row, we tried to support the shelter needs of our brothers and sisters there.”

He also highlighted Türkiye’s ongoing aid efforts to Gaza, noting that the 20th relief ship is scheduled to depart next week and that nearly 105,000 tons of aid have been delivered so far.

Sudan has faced a deepening humanitarian crisis since April 2023, as deadly clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have killed thousands and displaced millions. Of the country’s 18 states, the RSF currently controls all five states in the Darfur region, with only parts of North Darfur remaining under army control.
